Antisocial media:making yourself angry via a screen

Social media was once meant to connect people. And connect them with each other. The latter has certainly succeeded. Unfortunately, many people also take this opportunity in a less social way. Have you ever been verbally abused on Twitter or Facebook? And, let's be honest:have you ever scolded someone through your keyboard? It's starting to look like we've all created antisocial media!

Recreationally angry at antisocial media

You only have to click on any Facebook message and there are guaranteed negative reactions under it. From people who are recreationally angry:turn on the screen, and make yourself angry for a while. What bothers you about this world? Post it on Facebook!

It seems like an easy way to take a break. Without major consequences, because you can still become president of the United States if you like dirty Twitter! But is it really the case that there are few consequences to your recreational anger?

Making yourself angry:a good outlet?

Some people think there's no harm in making yourself angry. And this is certainly easy via (a)social media. First of all:on the other side of your connection, there is also just a person behind a screen. And swearing can really hurt. If we are already dealing with that as adults, how can we expect children with social media to stop bullying digitally? Second, it is not healthy for anyone to get really angry. Especially if that is because someone actually dares to write that they find Martien Meiland an annoying little man. Do you know or are you someone who likes to take a break through social media? Then take a look at the consequences of your subcutaneous anger.

What happens if we get angry and make antisocial media statements?

Some people really get mad when it comes to all those opinions on social media. Not only do we get antisocial media because of this, but it is also not really healthy for them. Everything happens in your body when you get angry:

  • your blood pressure, heart rate and testosterone level rise
  • the heart rhythm and your hormonal system are disturbed
  • your muscles and joints tense
  • Your body will produce excessive bile. That's where the expression "spitting his bile" comes from:expressing that you completely disagree with something. And social media are very useful for that!

It seems harmless, just leave a negative comment. Yet many people experience it as hurtful. And if you have to deal with it as an entrepreneur, it also affects you professionally.

Do you include it in your upbringing?

It actually belongs there, don't you think? As soon as you buy a smartphone for your child, and they are more active on social media, it is important that you also discuss this with them. That you discuss the risks associated with social media, not only in the field of cyber crime, but also bullying and people who anonymously contact you with perhaps the wrong intentions.

How do you deal with negativity on social media as an entrepreneur?

For many entrepreneurs, social media is the ideal way to advertise and work on their marketing. Unfortunately, it also has a downside, the antisocial media. Anyone can easily publicize your business in a negative way. By writing negative reviews, for example. How do you deal with that?

Even though you may not feel the need to engage with those angry people, it is wise to start a conversation. Try to avoid getting into a discussion. Don't defend yourself, try to understand why someone is so angry. You may not be able to agree 100%, but there will be more mutual understanding.

Have you ever (rightly or wrongly) gotten very angry on social media?
