Buying a children's mattress when they have outgrown the baby cot:what do you pay attention to?

Growing children need 2 things to continue to develop well. Healthy food and a good night's sleep. This will recharge them completely. Young children spend even more time in bed than out of it! A good children's mattress is therefore very important. Have you ever considered whether your child's mattress is actually in optimal condition? And what requirements should a children's mattress actually meet?

In this blog you can read what you should pay attention to when purchasing a mattress for your child. Children's mattresses are of course available in many types and (children's) sizes. But when can you speak of a good children's mattress? No worries; we looked it up for you. And are you in doubt about the condition of your own mattress? Then we have a blog for you, in which you can read approximately how long you can use a bed mattress.

Outgrown the baby mattress:children's mattress 70×140

You have your hands full with it. When the little ones are asleep, you finally have some rest… but even that, mom and dad have to support. And that also includes:providing a good children's mattress.

It all starts with a baby mattress, of course. They must above all have a lot of supporting capacity, and not be too soft. A baby mattress must also breathe well to prevent your child from getting too hot.

But all that sleep also ensures that your baby grows like cabbage. And before you know it, they have outgrown their baby mattress, and mom and dad have to buy a children's mattress. So what do you pay attention to? You can read that below.

When is it time for a children's mattress?

Is your child ready for a big bed? The moment at which they make the 'switch' differs per child. Do you feel comfortable leaving your child alone in a large bed? And is your child not afraid, or anxious? Does it regularly try to climb out of the cot? Then it is probably time for a bigger bed. And of course that includes a good children's mattress.

Buying a children's mattress:what do you pay attention to?

You want the best for your child, right? In this case, this does not only mean that your child is as comfortable as possible. When buying a children's mattress, you also have to pay attention to other things.

1. The right support

Precisely because children are still growing, their mattress is very important. They spend a lot of time on it anyway. And while sleeping, that can cause pressure points in that young body. However, it is important that the children's mattress is not too thin, but certainly not too hard. That is why many children's mattresses consist of memory foam in combination with pocket springs. This ensures that the pressure is redistributed over the entire body. The springs provide firmness, the foam for comfort. Always make sure that the mattress is neither too hard nor too soft.

2. Breathability with a children's mattress

If you are going to buy a children's mattress, make sure to look at the breathability. There is a lot of difference between them. Yet it is very important. The breathability of a good children's mattress prevents your child from overheating. Because air flows through it more easily, you prevent your child from scalding in his or her bed. Many parents are afraid that their child will get cold at night, but children are really more likely to be too hot than too cold.

3. Go for hygiene

They no longer need a diaper, but a nighttime accident can always happen. Annoying enough for your child. So go for a children's mattress with a washable cover. Because an accident is in a small corner, but so is the solution.

4. Children's mattress 70×140

If your little one has just outgrown the baby cot, a 70×140 children's mattress may seem a bit large. But don't underestimate those sprouts; they grow like weeds! Preferably go for a mattress that they can grow on for a while. You can of course also go for a bed that grows with you, which you can extend a little further each time.

The children's mattresses from Simba

We have tried several mattresses here in the house. This time it's Lotte's turn with a Simba mattress that she can try out. Check out the video to see exactly how this all works!

Now our girl is quite a comparator. So she prefers to try everything before she decides where she would like to lie on in the coming time. She loves our own mattress (she regularly sleeps in our bed), but her brother's bed also regularly has to rely on it. The reason? A guest house!

About once a week/a week and a half, Lotte invites a friend to come and stay. And -I'm not the worst- I go along with that, in the context of making memories. I like that Lotte feels so free to invite everyone to stay the night, and I hope she will look back on it with satisfaction in the future. Like… 'my parents had their whims and limits', but there was always room for fun and fun'.

New mattress for Lotte

You will undoubtedly understand that Lotte - since she can regularly be found in our bed and in her brother's - also wishes to have a 1.40 meter wide mattress. Rather exaggerated for children, but… very cozy if you have a girlfriend to stay with you. So I completely understand her. If I asked… bitch, what would you like for your birthday? Then the answer was always:a large mattress. One that I can sleep on with my BFF.

And who am I to say it isn't necessary? Of course you have to make choices, but when I saw her face as we rolled out a 1.40 meter wide mattress for her, it just made me happy. It just barely fits in her room, especially now that her own 'normal' bed is still there. That has to be cleared of course, but there is a problem… time 😉 .

Her experiences

I can now say that Lotte is completely enthusiastic about her new Simba mattress. It is not only nice for the two of you, but also when she sleeps alone she is apparently much more comfortable. Not too hard, not too soft. She falls asleep almost immediately and immediately calls out the next morning that she had a good night's sleep. See, that's what you do it for, of course. I find it one of the most difficult things, buying a good children's mattress. Just like buying your first children's pillow, also such a challenge. What do you choose and why?

The big advantage:you have a 100-day warranty. Unsatisfied? Then just send it back! One of the disadvantages I personally find that you cannot turn the mattress. There is therefore no option to, for example, turn the mattress every quarter to preserve the mattress for longer.

And the rest of her room? We will be working on that soon, because she can hardly turn her ass at the moment.
